Wedding Wednesday: Same-sex couples can now wed in Florida

Congratulations Florida for joining more than half the states in the nation in approving same-sex marriage.

Now, more than 216 million Americans, or 70 percent of the country, live in a state with marriage equality, according to the Human Rights Coalition.

County clerks in Florida began issuing licenses to same-sex couples on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at the behest of U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle of Tallahassee. In August, Hinkle found the state’s ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, and last week, he instructed clerks they had a legal duty to issue them.

In Southwest Florida an Tuesday, the Lee County, Florida Clerk’s Office issued 36 marriage licenses while Charlotte County and Collier County each issued 13.
