Wedding Wednesday: Same-sex wedding planning

Planning a same-sex wedding is pretty much like planning a heterosexual wedding. The couple picks the date, time and location. They decide their theme, how they will dress, who will officiate and how much money they will spend.

The wedding can be as traditional or extravagant as the couple wants — just like any other wedding.

The differences can lead people to make some comical or offensive comments. recently put out a list of 10 things not to say at a gay wedding. Basically, any guest attending a same-sex wedding should not make any assumptions about tradition or make jokes about it. Here are some of the things lists:

  • Which one of you is the bride?
  • Is this a real wedding?
  • Who will walk down the aisle?
  • What are the bridesmaids wearing?
  • Why isn’t so-and-so family member here?

Guests attending the ceremony should also avoid asking the couple about having children and don’t give them a card meant for a heterosexual couple.

If you are a same-sex couple planning a wedding — plan the wedding you’ve always dreamed of. Make it as traditional as you want and invite who you want. It’s your day and nothing should keep you from enjoying it.

When you run into negativity or obstacles, go around them. Unfortunately, there are some who will not support your special day but that’s their problem. Not yours. Same-sex couples have experienced unnecessary discrimination from florists, caterers and others.

However, there are many businesses, such as Cre8 Salon and Spa, who welcome anyone and everyone. They want to help every couple have the day they dreamed of, no matter who they are or who they love. Unfortunately, not every business operates that way.
