Wedding Wednesday: Do’s and Dont’s of wedding fashion

Let’s face it. We’ve all had that moment when we wondered, “Is this appropriate to wear to a wedding?” Choosing wedding attire can be a difficult task. Typically the wedding invitation will mention whether the attire is formal, casual, or daytime semi-formal. Most people can use this information to gauge the general level of formality, but what about the other aspects such as dress length, color, jewelry, or design? There are many little things that can be critiqued about a women’s outfit. Since women often put a great deal of effort into outfit planning, here are some tips for the ladies on how to navigate the rules of wedding fashions.

Don't wear whiteFirst things first, never wear white to a wedding. A bride only gets one special day to be all about her. It is her moment to stand out from the rest of the crowd in that stunning white gown, so let the bride have her day. There are plenty of other colors to choose from, although weddings are typically not the place to wear black. Black is often associated with sadness or death. A wedding day is one of the happiest days of a person’s life so wear a color that reflects this feeling. Sometimes it is acceptable to break out the black cocktail dress to a formal evening wedding. But if you do choose to wear black, make sure it is fun and stylish. Maybe spice it up with bright-colored lipstick or accessories.

Dress length is also important to consider as a wedding guest. You don’t want to gain unwanted attention by wearing anything inappropriately short. Try to wear a modest dress and keep it between the length of your fingertips and your knees. Excessive designs, patterns, and neon can also be distracting to guests. Sequins are often too gaudy for weddings and may make you appear overdressed. Keep it simple, comfortable, and appropriate.

Heels are fine, as are sandals for casual daytime weddings. Just find a pair you can walk in, and make sure you will still be able to walk by the end of the night. You don’t want uncomfortable shoes to hold you back from valuable time on the dance floor!

Now let’s talk about hair. Both updos and down do’s are always very popular at weddings, but are often hard to recreate yourself.
